In this article, I will take you through a list of the top 5 scuba regulators on the market right now for under $500.
Scuba diving is an addictive activity for me and many others. If you are serious about scuba diving you understand the time and effort it takes to select the right gear for you.
The most important part of your scuba kit is the regulator. It can be a big investment and it's important to find high-quality products that not only keep you safe underwater but also keep you within a budget.
With so many different options, models, styles, and types of regulators on the market today, making a well-informed decision can be the most difficult task to undertake. In my personal experience, I have always consulted my local dive shops for recommendations but I found that most shops are recommending what they have in store at that time which puts you into a narrow selection category. It can really put a loop on finding the best regulator available for your budget.

Features To Consider
First Stage
Serviceability - This is the most important feature to consider when purchasing a regulator. It's always a good idea to check service recommendations from the manufacturer as well as professional service tech's in your area. After all, your life could depend on it.
Balanced vs unbalanced - An unbalanced first stage will breathe stiffer as the tank pressure begins to drop where a balanced regulator; although typically more expensive, will breathe nicely throughout the entire dive.
Piston vs diaphragm- Piston regulators are simple and perform slightly better at depth. Diaphragm regulators are more resilient in cold water and water with a high amount of particles and salt as the internal parts aren't directly exposed to the water.
Cost - It's important to purchase from a reputable manufacturer and the price will usually reflect that. The best practice is to inform yourself and make sure you get the best regulator in your budget.
Configuration - the standard configuration in North America is the yoke. I fit the standard aluminum tank. However, some tech divers like the secure connection of the DIN-style regulator.
Ports - Make sure that when you purchase a regulator that it has the right amount of low and high-pressure ports. It's important to consider your long term goals as well. You will need to know if you're going to be diving cold water where you will need an extra low-pressure port for the drysuit or a high-pressure port for a dive computer.
Second Stage
Weight- Its important your mouth and jaw don't get tired from towing a heavy regulator around the dive site.
Design - It's amazing the difference in comfort that a well-streamlined regulator makes. More so that air-water tends to create turbulence and that that can be uncomfortable if your second stage is not streamlined.

IST Sports R860
Price: $408.00 Buy Now
The R860 is the flagship in IST Sports’ Pro Line of scuba regulators, and rightfully so. Its R-8 1st stage is a balanced
diaphragm design that’s available with an optional environmental kit that prevents freezing when diving
in cold-water conditions. There are two high-pressure ports and four intermediate ports mounted on a swivel
turret for easy hose routing. On breathing machine simulator tests, the 1st stage is one of the best ever tested
by Scuba Diving Magazine’s ScubaLab. The O-60 2nd stage is equipped with a metal balancing tube and a pair
of user adjustments: the dive/pre-dive thumb lever detunes the regulator to minimize freeflow on the surface;
the breathing resistance knob lets you regulate airflow as you descend to deeper depths. Bottom line: the
R-860 is designed for divers of all skill levels and for water conditions ranging from tropics to the arctic.
Features
R8 BALANCED DIAPHRAGM 1st STAGE
It has a high-flow, fast-acting valve system that is capable of delivering a large amount of breathing gas in an instant, irrespective breathing demand, cylinder pressure, or depth. It has not only passed the stringent CE test but the performance is comparable with the best available.
4 intermediate pressure ports (located in the swivel turret) and 2 high-pressure ports.
Available with YOKE or 300BAR DIN (G5/8) connector.
Anti-freeze models are available Separately.
Inter. pressure setting @ 9.5~10.0 bar (137~145psi)
Ventilation rate @ 206 bar (3000psi): 3820L / min. (135 cu ft / min.)
O60 BALANCED 2nd STAGE
The O60 second stage is equipped with a metal balancing tube and an adjustment knob. They are able to meet heavy breathing demand with ease and in extremely cold water they also act as a heat sink to prevent icing.
Ease of breathing is achieved by a purposely shaped housing interior, which is designed to create a pressure drop in the area just before the mouthpiece. This means air gets pulled towards the diver's mouth directly after leaving the valve.
The volume of air leaving the valve can be fine-tuned by the adjustment the knob on the side of the O60 at any time so the diver can choose to breathe conservatively, or to open the valve up for more air in physical demanding situations.
The pre-dive / dive switch next to the adjustment knob prevents the valve from free-flowing while on the surface.
The second stage comes with our high-spec, large bore intermediate pressure hose (max. service pressure @ 34.5 BAR / 500psi) which flows sufficient breathing air even when the demand is heavy.
The IST Sports R860 may not have a huge following but our research indicates it is definitely a great competitor in the category of Best regulator for under $500. Boasting some very good features with an affordable price tag.
